Born in Israel in 1976, Harari received his PhD from the University of Oxford in 2002. He is currently a Lecturer at the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a Distinguished Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for the Study of Existential Risk. In 2019, following the international success of his books, Yuval Noah Harari co-founded SAPIENSHIP with his husband and original agent, Itzik Yahav. Sapienship is a social impact company with projects in the fields of education and storytelling, whose main goal is to focus the public conversation on the most important global challenges facing the world today.
Yuval Noah Harari has delivered keynote speeches on the future of humanity at the World Economic Forum in Davos, including on the main Congress Hall stage in 2018 and 2020. He regularly engages in discussions on global issues with world leaders. Harari has had public conversations with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He has also met with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Argentine President Mauricio Macri, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Shanghai’s Mayor Ying Yong.
In 2019, Harari participated in a filmed discussion with Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg about technology and the future of society. He was featured in a CBS 60 Minutes profile in 2021 and, in 2018, presented the first-ever TED talk delivered by a digital avatar. Initially specializing in world, medieval, and military history, his current research explores macro-historical questions. He examines the relationship between history and biology, the difference between Homo sapiens and other animals, the direction of history, and ethical dilemmas arising from science and technology in the 21st century.
